I am going to start building a cave structure from flagstone for my currently cycling mbuna tank and i need to know how big of space between slabs do i need to have for the fish. I will be stocking the 55g tank with yellow labs, red zebras, and yellow tailed aceii

They like it snug, so just big enough for an adult specimen to fit into, I'd say. Lots of swim through places are good too, mine seem to avoid caves that don't have an escape route.

I just recently started with cichlids. Like you, I used some slabs (I live in Kentucky, and we have lots of sandstone, so I used sandstone slabs about 2" thick, and built huts out of river cobbles 1-3" in diameter. I have been amazed that my 3 inch labs can zip through gaps I never intended as "entrances". Some have open bottoms, but I built some on 1/4 inch late. If you have a stone dealer locally, cobbles are cheap, about 35 pounds for $5.[/img]
