I have talked to a few people and read in some of the posts that they don't use carbon with thier filters. Is carbon really needed or is it a matter of choice? I know you are to remove the carbon when using certain medications for treatment, but is it beneficial to the fish to use carbon at all?

I don't see any benefit. A filter with a good bio-mass to remove ammonia and nitrItes along with well maintained mechanical filtration will be far more benificial in the long run. Carbon absorbing organic materials could actually interfere with growing a good bacteria field.

I keep carbon on hand for emergencies only.

I have 3 Fluval Canisters on my 125 gallon. I dedicated one filter to nothing but carbon. I can't honestly give you a scientific explanation why, but my LFS told me that it would cut down on the :fish: smell. So far so good, but again I might be over doing it.

I stopped using carbon one time and ill never do it again. The smell without it gets horrible even with weekly water changes. You probably wont notice it because your around it all the time. People who come in your house definitely notice it. The only drawback *** found is its only good for about 3-4 weeks tops and it has to be changed out.
Necessity no, Nice to have, Definitely.

Think of it like this people who smoke dont think they stink and dont even notice it. Non-smokers smell it instantly. Same with your tank.

I formerly used carbon in my HOB Filters. Once in awhile I may use it-but not much anymore. I do use it in my 10g fry tank and 30 g juvie tank. For me-I have found that I can do w/o it. I believe it can absorb some smells from an aquarium. It is a personal choice of course--some may use it often and others not. Just My Opinion. 8)
