hmmm. I'm stumped.. Don't know what it is... it looks south american to me but I can't place it. She didn't know what it is? Is there a way to fin out where she got it?

As for the HITH lots of water changes 10% or so daily, add salt to the water and under feed the fish. Keep the temp around 83 and make sure there's plenty of oxygenation in the water.

Keep the tank relatively bare like it's shown in the picture...

It takes a long ti,e to reverse so be patient... And I'm going to do some digging on what you have... I'm not going to throw names out there until I'm confident.

Welcome to the C-F

I combined your threads...
Hi cichlidlover1987,

Welcome. It looks like you have a 'Geophagus' sp. "Bahia Red" from South America. If you are familiar with the Geophagus genus, these guys do not fit the typical earth eater mold. They fall under the G. brasiliensis complex of the genus which are much more aggressive and robust. They grow quite large reaching 10+ inches. How big is yours?

I am not an expert on the G. brasiliensis complex, I just have what I think is a Bahia red and yours looks like mine. However, I believe there are many similar variants of these cichlids; therefore, my identification of your and/or my fish may be incorrect.

Let’s see what TFG comes up with and/or what other have to say.

Great looking fish, I hope you can help out his HITH with some clean water and quality food.

Thanks,
Matt
Ah! It was on the tip of my tounge! I believe you've got it Matt, sometimes it's a little difficult to tell through pictures... and you are correct in saying there's many variants, some showing tons of red, others not so much... Depending on it's lineage will depend on the amount of red shown...

It would be great if the OP could research back as far as possible to find out it's type local...
