Hi. I've been thinking of getting some buffalo head cichlids for a long time.

I know that they like to dig and so just wonder what level of sand I should put in the tank to keep them happy. Some sites say only 1 inch, others 2 and some even 3.
I would be keen to hear what other people have done, without letting the buffaloes hit the glass at the bottom.

Thanks

What is your concern with them digging until they get to the glass? Really, it probably won't matter how deep you make it, if they want to dig, they'll dig down 3" or more. It comes down to what you want from the tank, how it will look etc. Deeper substrates can trap gasses, that when released, can become toxic... unless you regularly clean the substrate, and turn it over, or have burrowing snails etc. So that is something to take into consideration as well.

Absolutely true. Substrate depth is largely an aesthetic choice. :thumb:
