Hello, every one,

I went on vacation and had my brother feed my fish while i was gone ( Mistake), and i came home to brown algae developing on my tank and on the plants. What could be the cause of this, and how should i go about getting rid of it ???

Thank you,

Do you have anything in the tank that will eat algae? If so just leave the light off for a few days and it will grow slower than it is consumed. I genuinely dislike chemical treatments for algae so the other alternative is to clean the glass and vacuum the substrate.

I have the lights on timers. they are on from 4pm - 11pm. Is that too long ???? What sort of algae eating fish would you suggest for this tank ?

How big is the tank?

I have Chinese algae eaters (sometimes call siamese). They do a great job at cleanup and as adults continue to clean, unlike some algae eaters that get snobby and stop cleaning the glass as adults.

Those algae eaters can get 5" or so and I don't think you want to take up 1/3 of your bioload with it as its not a good looking fish compared to your cichlids.
