rather than spending $20 for a box of ceramic cylinders at the LPS, what are some of you using for biological filter media in your canister filters?

anything with a lot of surface area will work. i have even used the cut-to-fit furnace filters. just cut it to fit the size you need.
doesn't really mater. the cut-to-fit furnace filters are plastic strands woven together.
Quilt batting from Walmart - same as filter floss. It is excellent for both, biological and mechanical filtration :thumb:

Do these decrease the flow/rate?

It depends on how much quilt batting you stuff into a filter. It is certainly possible to overstuff a filter and drastically decrease the flow rate. If you overfill, the filter will also clog up pretty quickly. I know this from painful experience

However, with some practice you will know how much filter floss to use, so you have a very good flow rate, and very little bypass. The filter floss will fit itself snugly into every nook and cranny of your filter :thumb:

Filter floss is that Eheim sold with the classic series canisters in the 1970s in Germany. Yup, that's when I started in the hobby. Specialized bio filter materials came later. I have tried many, but so far found none that could beat the floss - especially for the price you can get it at Walmart!
+1 to batting also could use those plastic scrubby's. they come about 6 for a $1 at a dollar store... they are a lot like bio balls and many folks use them in sumps..no reason you can not make them fit in a canister
