Has anybody tried using barnacles in place of shells for shell swellers? Just curious, I have a 29 biocube and getting back in cichlids and would like some shell dwellers, and have barnacles on hand already from keeping saltwater aquarium. Thanks for your input.

Depends on the shellies, but in general, they like to move and bury and burrow the shells into an exact position- which is difficult to do with barnacles. Also, the lack of spiral will likely keep females from breeding.

Yeah I used them a while back, my young BN Plecs loved them also....
The dwarf sumbu liked them a lot :thumb:

I've had a lot of success with altos and bn plecos breeding in barnacles, also. Though I've never been lucky enough to come across Sumbu's yet. I do know that other shellies like muties, occies, brevis, etc much prefer shells. The rejected/extra males usually ended up living in the barnacles.
