I know aragonite it typically used for salt water but a friend of mine said that he knows of people that use it in cichlid tanks because it buffers the pH. Is it true and is it safe?

I use it , and it's safe and it does help buffer ph. Kinda expensive (especially for a larger tank set ups)but good stuff.

How often will it need to be replaced due to the buffering affect? I have heard it buffers as it decays or wears away.

It's always dissolving but the rate is rather negligible I would think. You could have it in your tank for a number of years and probably wouldn't notice the difference unless you physically dried it all and weighed it.
