Yes I have heard alot of people using these shells for their multis as long as they are big enough like you said.

Found this online so dont know how effective it is:
Here's a good way you would never imagine. It is just to make the point of a pin pierce the center of its shell. The snail won't die, and it will creep outside. Now it will be unwilling to go back any more unless you play a too bad joke on it.

where can you get escargot shells from? it seems like it would be easier just to get apple snails from locals trying to sell them for 50cents each

You can get nice, clean, perfect size and shape whale-eye shells for $0.35 each.

Simpler solution is just to go to a local hobby store (Hobby Lobby) and buy a bag of assorted shells. They come with a bunch of turbo shells. You can get between 10-20 shells for about 5 dollars, and you don't have to kill any live snails.
