I would go with one male and a couple of females with clearly defined territories, and then you can add some tetras and other fish as well.

according to nearly every article i've read about them, you could definately keep more than 1 in a 30. 2 males and 4-5 females would probably work as long as you give them plenty of hiding spots to choose from, allowing them to keep seperate territories.
