The best way to keep them is in a tank of 36" minimum. One male to a few females is best. Multiple males may not be tolerated unless the tank is longer. Aggression can easily be controlled with proper tank size, retreats, and m/f ratios. You can add baking soda and Epsom salt to raise KH and GH, and then adjust tank temperature to 85 degrees. The temperature can be high, a range of 85 - 90F is fine. Provide lots of rocks, as males are constantly wanting to spawn and females need a retreat. Provide rocky crevices for females to release fry and the fry will survive and grow out. Fry are very hardy and grow quickly. They mature and are spawning at less than six months post release. Both fry and adults eagerly accept pellet food. A very active and interesting fish.
