I was at a sign shop today that was going out of business. I picked up a 2 foot x 4 foot sheet of acrylic for $25, hoping I could build a plywood tank with it. I am a trades person, so the woodworking and fiberglass work etc. is all pretty straight forward, just haven't ever tried to glue plexi glass and am not sure how silicone will bond with it. I was hoping someone here has done this.

The acrylic is just shy of 3/4 inch thick. Is this going to be too thick for good viewing? Would I be better off going with glass?

Acrylic clarity is supposedly better than glass, but I've never noticed any difference myself. I've heard that silicone doesn't adhere to acrylic, but have not tried it. I'm sure there's probaly a way to use it. Since you got such a great deal on that, I'd not give up on it too easily. 3/4" acrylic is very expensive, typically. I just checked my online source and a piece like that new is $200.

i have heard dow 795 does hold to acrylic. all you have to do is give the acrylic a light sanding were it will but up to the wood. and apply dow 795 as regular silicone. now down side of this is it take 3 weeks to cure rather then 1 but it is safe and will hold up.
