80G CA biotope

Hello all! Bouncing from sub-forum to sub-forum (S-America --> Tanganyika --> C-America) trying to find a right stock for the tank and hopefully this is where I'll continue... :D


Tank 100 x 50 x 60 cm / 300 l (40" x 20" x 24" / 80 USG) and the hardscape can be seen in pic. For American biotope a few tree branches + hardy plants will be added.

Filtering with top box filter (1200 l/h, 90 cm long box with several sections for different filter medias so mostly biological filtering) and 2 x Tetratec 1000 internal filters (500-1000 l/h each). Possibly need also a stream pump to put more movement to the tank (to make air circulate better, the tank being pretty high compared to other dimensions). Lights very basic LED lights; 12 LEDs, total 12W.

Temperatures will be around +28'C / 82F all over the year (no heater needed, blessings or curses of living near The Equator...).

So now... Suggestions for the stock! "Anything goes" and mostly anything can be found.

The tank size is quite limiting for CA fish.

Perhaps a small group of Herotilapia Multispinosa, formerly Archocentrus, would work. Rainbow cichlids. Some swordtails for dithers.

Saw your post in the Tang section. That lake would allow more diversity.

Background looks cool.

Yes, reality hits so decided to change continent and go for smaller ones: reserved 6 x African Butterfly Cichlid (Anomalochromis thomasi) for starters; now just waiting for the tank to mature. Over here in Asia thomasi not so easy to find at all; guess more colourful and bigger cichlids are preferred instead. Luckily found couple of breeders who just happened to have thomasis in their tanks.

Maybe adding a leopard gourami in as the king of the tank, but not yet so sure about schooling fish - 40" tank a bit too short for Congo tetras?

Anyhow lots of plants and driftwood in must buy list now...

I have no experience with Congo tetras. I have read that they do best in 4' tanks.
