75 gal Stocking advise

6300 Views 28 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Gordo33
I would like to set up my 75 gal tank for Lake Tanganyika Species. I have been looking at you tube videos and researching for the last few weeks. I would like to have 1-2 species that are either sand or shell dwellers, and 1-2 species that occupy the middle level of the water column. The pH of my water is 7.4 , the Gh is 180 ppm and Kh is 90 ppm. Any stocking recommendations will be greatly appreciated.

The more I thought about the trets, the more I realized I would not try this. They do have a reputation for killing everything in the tank when they spawn...including each other when they are in a species tank.

If I were going to try trets again, I would probably try a species tank with 1m:15 females in a 75G and see how that went before I tried replacing some of the females with other species.

I would be willing to try this, but it would be an experiment. Trets are large and aggressive. I like them too.

Cyps use the upper levels. Paracyps are cave dwellers so maybe not as much of an open water schooling effect as the cyps.
Another possible consideration for the Tret would be the N. Buescheri. What's your opinion for that set up?

With the paracyps being cave dwellers if I choose to go with them should my scape include caves set up at the mid to upper water levels.
Buescheri instead of trets? Brett wrote an article on buescheri...I think they are on the timid side.

I was thinking if they were hanging out in caves they would not be schooling like you wanted. But if you want to consider them, I have read people lean tall pieces of slate against the back glass for them to duck behind.

I just saw your response about reconsidering your answer about the Trets. I'm not interested in a species only tank so they're out . I did read the article Brett wrote about Buescheri. Sounds like an interesting fish.
The reason I'm asking about different fish I want back up plans if I can't source the specific fish I'm interested in.
I saw a you tube video by Rachel OLEARY about a recent 75 gal set up she did . I like the Compressiceps and was intrigued by the shell variety she has along with paracyps and and cyps. I thought if I got the Compress shell it opened up the door for a different rock dweler in addition to a Julio.
I will consider the Multi if I go the Julio and Compress route .
I joined the local aquarium club this month . My plan is to go to the next meeting to seek out Tangy fish keepers about purchasing the fish I want . So in the mean time I'm researching the possible combos that will work for my tank.
Another Tangy I like is the Eretmodus. Would that work the the fish I'm considering?
thanks for the help

Why not just look at the vendor list up front?

I looked at the vendor list for the on line site you recommended . He has Julios but not the the one I was interested in. Also does not list Buescheri . The LFS in my area carry some of what I want and may be able to order a fish if their suppliers have them. So I may need multiple sources to get the fish I want
What does F1 listed with the fish mean?

Anyway I figure if I have a list of 6 / 8 fish I'm interested in I should be able find 4 of them.
My Cyps school from top to bottom males claim rocks. I have buescheri in several tanks they all rarely move any further than a few inches from their cave, very reclusive but amazingly beautiful fish. They all for me seem to like larger caves and very much prefer hidden openings so the cave inside the cave kinda. I add the Puncs last because they don't like anything in their spot either, pretty much every other fish pays almost no attention to other species swimming around them but the Puncs charge everything in their say 6"x6"x8" area.

Cyps schooling back and forth. Notice the open area to the right. Most of the day the Cyps shoal there. Lots and lots of caves over 200lbs of stones layered with screen separating the layers pvc T's hidden under in various spots also.

Thanks for posting the pics. Your tank looks great. What type of rock is in your tank?
