First off I want to say hello.

I have searched and learned a lot but i think i need a more specific answer. I want to try something less expensive this time and cichlids are so colorful. This will be my first freshwater tank. So far my tank was a saltwater reef tank. I had it drilled in the upper right hand side so i could run a sump. My question is would it be better to run a canister or a sump? I know sumps are a little noisy but thats not a big issue to me. The issue is what would filter better?

Also could i use my Power compact light or would that be too powerful?

If the tank is drilled, I would use the sump. There are a lot of pro's, which using one you already know. Set up correctly it is an excellent filtration system. As far as the light, it's up to you. Some of the salt water lighting can drown out the color of your cichlids. So try it and see if you like it.
