I'd say that you're just looking for a more natural rock/pebble kind of feel. I'd go visit a local landscaping supply place (if any are around you) and grab a few buckets of small river rock type pebbles for the substrate. I don't know about Canada, but here in Oregon there are always a few different options to pick from at these places.
THey should also have a bunch of different types of larger rocks to dig through. That's more personal preference than anything.
Maybe get some petrified wood? Or get driftwood and soak it for a couple days to get all the tannins out.
Tank decoration is 100% what you like to look at - so go to the rock supply place and just mess around with various combination. Best of all - it should be super cheap. I got 150pounds of rock for $35 the other day.
