A high porosity biomedia that provides efficient biofiltration for the removal of nitrogenous waste. Matrix is a porous inorganic solid about 10 mm in diameter. Each liter of Matrix provides as much surface (<162 m) as 40 liters of plastic balls! Plastic bio-materials provide only external surface area, whereas Matrix provides internal macroporous surface area. These macropores are ideally sized for the support of nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria. This allows Matrix, unlike other forms of biomedia, to remove nitrate along with ammonia and nitrite, simultaneously and in the same filter. Matrix is completely inert and will not breakdown. It need not be replaced. Use 250 mL of Matrix for each 25 gallons. Since the majority of the bacteria are internal, Matrix may be rinsed when needed without damaging the filter. Matrix is compatible with all types of wet or wet-dry filters. Marine or freshwater use.
1 liter, 4 liters, 20 liters. Use 1 to 2 Liter(s) of Matrix™ for each 400 L (100 gallons) of water.
I just put this media into all my canisters and AC HOB's. It shows much better loading than the other biomedia I was using. My water is clear and my parameters are great. Love this media.

I use Eheim canister filters that came with Eheim pro media. Every time I serviced the filters The pro media was clogged and breaking down into small grit. I switched to Matrix and have noticed cleaner water and no break down of the media.
Nothing I've used as replaced water changes for reducing nitrates and that goes for this product as well. It does keep ammonia and nitrites at zero in my heavily populated african cichlid tanks. The reasonable cost and top notch performance make it a must use product.
I contacted both Eheim and Seachems for some hard "numbers". Eheim's Substrat Pro provides only 45,000 cm2 of surface area for beneficial bacteria to grow on (per liter). Seachems Matrix provides over 160,000 cm2 of surface area for beneficial bacteria to grow on (per liter), or OVER 3 times as much as the Eheim media! This Matrix is pretty amazing stuff, because the Eheim media is really a VERY good product, so just imagine how much better the Matrix is compared to all the other very average Bio-Medias on the market today!!! Obviously, not all Bio-Medias are created equal! Be smart and buy the Seachem's Matrix! BigAlsOnline.com usually has the cheapest prices.
I feel this product is great for supporting a heavy bioload. It really enhances the process of getting rid of ammonia and nitrite. Unfortunately, it just stops right there and it doesn't do what I really want it to do - reducing nitrate. Seachem should never mention it on the description that "this product can house aerobic AND anaerobic bacteria, which remove nitrate along the way with ammonia and nitrite". Therefore, for people looking to decrease the frequency of your W/C, this is not the product you wanna invest money into.
This product is all you'll ever need for Biological filtration media, in any of your aquariums. I use Seachem Matrix in a DIY wet/dry sump system, all my canisters and even put it in where the carbon goes for the filter screens in my Penguin power filters! In short, this stuff will grow out a colony of beneficial bacteria better than just about anything else out there. - Comparable to EHFI Substrate. The cost of this product is far less than its' competition, and seems to be exactly the same stuff! Get this biological media for your next filtration system - you Will Not be disappointed! VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
