It is a great magazine. and well worth a subscription, the only complaint i have is it does repeat itself a little. ie they had 3 articles on pufferfish (freshwater) 2 on singrays and 2 on peacocks, over the space of a year.
I did try tropical fish hobbiest once, and wont bother with it again, its more expensive, and dosent compare to this, the info supplied in PFK is normally quite in depth, as well as giving ideas for less usual tank setups
In the past I've subscribed to Tropical Fish Hobbyist (1 year) and Aquarium Fish Magazine (2 years) however neither compares to Practical Fishkeeping. I read the magazines predominantly because of the info on the fish and even though this is a UK based mag most of the products reviewed are available in North America. It also has far less advertising when compared to the other magazines I've read. You also can't beat contributors like Ian Fuller on Catfish, Mary Bailey on Cichlids and Dr. Peter Burgess on health to name just a few. I found they provide information relevant to keeping fish in aquaria and less about the habitats they came from. Of course the natural habitat is important however it's just not the primary focus. I highly recommend everyone at least take a look next time they're in a book store.
I got one at a Barnes&Noble here in the U.s. It costs a little more because its from the U.K. Lots of good info.

I learn by total immersion. I've purchased every newsstand fish magazine there is and this puts all of the other to shame. You won't regret paying more for it in the US. It's normally the equivalent of 2-3 of the 'other' mags combined.
