If you worry about how your fish will survive in the event of a power outage, the Silent Air Pump will give you peace of mind. It detects a power outage immediately and begins to provide lifesaving bubbles for as long as they're needed. When the power comes back on, it shuts off to preserve battery life.
Runs on 2 "D" batteries (not included) and plugs into a standard AC outlet. Includes the pump, silicone tubing and an air stone.
For anyone who might be preparing for possible power outages this hurricane season, I did a bit of testing. I purchased a couple of the Penn Plax Silent Air B11 battery operated air pumps, along with some sponge filters. I wanted to find out how many D size batteries I should have on hand to run them in the event we have any power outages this season. All I did for the test was to attach an airstone using about 2 ft. of tubing, and a check valve. I used Duracell batteries for the test (I'm a little biased towards Duracell, but I think Energizer would be about the same - cheaper batteries I'm not sure). The pump ran continuously for approximately 4 1/2 days. I'm pleased with the air pumps and their performance. They are extremely noisy, but that's no problem if it means keeping the fish alive.
I have 2 running in my fully stocked 55 gallon, and they kept all my fish fine for the two day power outage. They are VERY loud out of the box, but that can be fixed very easily. Take a small rubbermaid box with a tightly fitting lid, wrap the air pumps with a towel, and drill holes for the air lines(the wires can go out the top). This REALLY quiets it down. The only complaint I have is the air line it comes with is only about 8" long....nothing really
Agree with previous post. Build quiality is better then other battery operated air pumps. The fact that you can just plug it in for it to automatically turn on in the event of a power loss makes it a good investment, especially if i'm away for the weekend.
