I thought I'd give this product a try for a 10G quarantine tank that I was fishless cycling. I poured the product in one day before adding ammonia. I added a minimal amount of ammonia (1.0ppm) in regards to fishless cycling standards. I never got any detectable signs of nitrite, good! But, I never got any detectable signs of nitrate after 4 days of using this product and adding ammonia. Best bet to start a fishless cycle is to add existing media from an established tank. Better yet, if you can get your hands on enough bio-media, you can fully and instantly cycle your tank better than this expensive pouch of cold stuff.
Nitrite level was pretty high in my 2 week new still-being-cycled 35 gallon tank. Unfortunately, a friend wanted to pass me some Cichlids immediately. I had to resort to Bio-Spira. I bought the 1 oz bag for $13, pour it in 4 hours before I put in nine 1 1/2 inch babies. Nitrite is undetectable the next day and my fish is active and living well. I am a believer, thanks to Hovanek.
I put 3 oz. of Bio-spira into my new 55 gallon cichlid tank about 15 minutes before adding the fish. Now I'm at day 8 with 16 cichlids and 4 syndontis and I haven't had any measureable amounts of ammonia or nitrite. It is a little pricey but if you're like me and don't want to wait a month or more for the tank to cycle, this product is exactly what you need. I can't recommend it highly enough. Just make sure to buy it refrigerated and keep it that way.
I had a newly setup 72 gallon tank that had an ammonia spike of 3 to 4. I put in 3oz of this product and in 48 hours my ammonia was at 0, nitrites 0 and nitrates at 20-30. Costly at $20/3oz but worth the price for its effectiveness.
This product is awesome! It actually does instantly start the nitrogen cycle, unlike most other biological starters. This is likely due to the prescene of Nitrospira, which is the actual bacteria is nature that oxidizes nitrite to nitrate. I started up a fresh 110 Gal African cichlid tank with 25 fish, and never had ammonia spike past 2ppm and nitrite was never over 1ppm. This product is certainly more expensive than some of the other biological starters; but then, it actually works, and fast - an important thing when a tank can hold $700 of cichlids.
I added this to the water about a 1/2 hour before my cichlids. The water on the second day was a little cloudy, by the third day it was clear again. I didn't have an ammonia or nitrite test kit, so I took a water sample to a LFS on the fourth day, and the ammonia and nitrite readings both had a reading of 0! I highly recommend this stuff to anyone starting a new tank.
I cycled my 75 gallon tank with bio-spira and added 7 juvenille cichlids immediatly...There have been no problems. A very good value, very easy to use. well worth the money if you don't want to wait for you tank to cycle.
With scepticism, I added the appropriate amount to my stocked 36 gallon bowfront. Both ammonia annd nitrite readings plummeted to 0 within 24 hours, and nitrate rose promptly. No problems since. I have never tried any of the other products in this class, but BioSpira appears to be a winner!
Ok there isn't much to say here, this stuff works I haven't had a fish die yet since setting up my new aquarium. Only complaint is that I bought it in bag form of 3 oz (90 gal). I used only 2 oz. for my 55 and had throw rest away because it didn't come in a bottle, but a pouch. Not really enough reason to not buy this though.
One of the few products I've ever used that came through as promised. 1 day after putting it in my tank the ammonia and nirtites were 0 and the nitrates began to rise slowly from baseline. 1 month after, the story is still the same. I believe this product will change the way everybody cycles aquariums. It cost me $21.99 (US) for a 3oz bag, enough for a 90 gallon tank. My only complaint is that it was difficult to find.
