"50 percent failure rate"
I have had four of the 250 watt models. Two are working correctly still. One doesn't heat anymore. The forth one took my african tank up to 90 some degrees and kill over twenty fish. These heater were less than a year old when they failed. Accurate temp control when they work.

"Jager quality has gone downhill big time !"
I will make this review short and sweet ! Jager heaters the old green ones were very dependable and the temperature was very stable 99% of the time. Now if you offered me a Jager heater I would deposit it in the nearest garbage can !!! They just plain SUCK ! Don't trust your beautiful fish with these cookers.

"Good quality, accurate heater"
This is an impressive heater that has been keeping a 15-gallon aquarium right at the set-point. The small button that locks the temperature dial in place was a small annoyance. I gently pulled it out with a small pliers and worked it back and forth a few times, and it hasn't given me any further problems. A small problem on an otherwise excellent heater. Another important note: initially, I was concerned about a temperature difference between the heater setting and the aquarium thermometer, so I calibrated the thermometer and found that it was off by 5 degrees, which is a large % error. Please remember to check the calibration of all thermometers before using this or any other brand of heater.

"No problems whatsoever."
i have had the heater now for a little over a year and a half. the tank temp. is always stable and never really fluctuates. sure it isn't totally submersible, but that's no big deal and even makes adjusting the temp. dial even easier. i don't know how lazy some peole are, but i always unplug electrical equipment during water changes and stuff. also, the heater is built really, really well.

i had a rena cal-top, aquaclear heater, and a visi therm deluxe and each looked cheap and poorly built compared to this heater. its quality construction!

take care of the heater and just follow the instructions given, it should last a very long time. ps- the heater holder's is good for only a year or so, but that's a 2 dollar part.

"So far, they're perfect..."
I have two of these heaters. They maintain steady temperature and are very easy to calibrate. At roughly the same cost as all the other heaters out there, the Eheims are a no brainer.

"Reliable heater"
It's reliable and that should be enough said. I have used this heater for over 9 months on several tanks. I never had a problem with it. Cost a little more but I don't have to worry about frying my fish.

"Ebo Jager is coasting on the reputation established 20 years ago"
I bought a 250 watt heater for a 30g tank about 3 years ago, at the time everybody was saying Ebo Jager was the best heater available. After driving all over town to find one, my first impression was that it was a pretty good heater. The heater was marked with maximum water level line which indicated that this particular heater is not submersible, great, it's got to be vertical and I'll have to remember to turn it off during water changes. Suprise number two was that the temperature dial was almost 5 degrees off, well that's why I have a thermometer anyway. So 3 years later the heater is still working, unlike the cheap heaters that get stuck in the on position and kill your fish after 3 months of use. I did find that the temperature dial can be calibrated even though the instructions don't make any mention of how to perform the calibration and there is a lot of conflicting information on rather the heater is actually submersible even though it's marked as not submersible.

My biggest gripe is that my heater will no longer bring a 30g tank above 78F, even though it's rated for a much larger aquarium. This makes it pretty useless as I had planned on keeping the tank as a hospital tank, but I usually like to keep my hospital tanks at 82F or higher. I don't think I'll buy another Ebo Jager, in my mind a quality product would have accurate documentation, quality materials and workmanship, robust design and consistent performance,

"OLD ONES ARE GOOD ONES"
I have had 4 ebo's in all 4 of my tanks with zero problems, however mine were purchased in the late 80's and early 90's. All are still in sevice to this day. Without a flaw. I simply could not ask for a better heater. These heaters have met and exceeded ALL of my expectations. I cannot speak for newer ones though. I am always skeptical of "buy-out" changes in companies. Whenever old companies are sold to new ones there is always always always problems. I hope that the new company will uphold the quality that my older ebo's have given me.

"Strong heater"
I have 2 Jager heaters in a tank w/ an oscar and they're strong enough to handle attacks from him. They keep the temp in my tank stable and I haven't had any problems with them.

"Quality has gone downhill"
After being a former aquarium enthusiast, with several "meltdowns" with heaters, I understood why you never skimp on the heater. So when I first set up this 34 hex aquarium in 94, I wanted the best heater on the market. Ebo-Jager was highly recommended. This heater truly was the best I have ever used. Temperature NEVER fluctuated, and it worked flawless for 10 years until the heating coil burned out. I obviously replaced it with another Ebo-Jager, but it was not the same. The simple protected temperature adjustment slot was replaced with an outside dial, that needed callibration by the consumer to work properly. After figuring out how to work this, I had the tank temp stable... until 13 months later a meltdown occured (out of warrantee). I figured this was an anomoly, so purchased another ebo-jager. Within months, this heater couldn't hold the temp. A third was purchased, and this too failed a couple of years later. Appearantly ebo-jager was bought up by another company, and they must have changed the design and quality. 3 bad heaters is not a fluke. If you are considering them, think again. They are living off an OLD reputation.

"Innacurate"
I expected more from Eheim. I bought three Jager heaters and not one of them was accurate, about four degrees off!

"Definitely not what they used to be."
I remember when Ebo-Jager was THE brand to have for an aquarium heater. Now it seems like the newer ones have a less effective design and quality control. Don't get me wrong, it's better than a lot of junk out there. But, they're not as accurate as they used to be, nor do they evenly heat the water as well.

"Not near as great as they used to be; will not buy another one unless quality improves drastically"
Have used them in a variety of tanks over the years, and they had performed extremely well. I set up a fish room this past summer, and bought ~30 Ebo Jaegers for all my tanks, varying in size from 50 watt to 300 watt heaters. I've taken at least 6 back due to malfunctions, ranging from not shutting off (water over 96 F. and still heating when I caught this one; was set for 77 and had been working for ~3-4 months), not being able to increase water temp. beyond 86 F. regardless of having the heater recalibrated 3 times by the LFS where I bought the heater from (200 watt heater in 50 gallon Discus tank - identical set-up in 6 other tanks, with no such issues), 4 degree (F.) fluctuation, and water damage leading to complete malfunction. I'm really gun shy now, checking water temp. 3-4 times a day, have repositioned all heaters so they are no longer submerged, and currently looking at another brand to replace yet another defective 3 month old Ebo Jaeger. Was a great product, but personally, will not trust one again, and wouldn't recommend them to anyone!

"Have served me well."
I've had very good luck with these filters, I've just purchased my fourth one, and I've only lost one 50watter that was in a 10gallon in a very cold basement. My two older ones are the Ebo brand, and the new one is the Eheim version. So far so good with this things. Sometimes the actual temp can be a few degrees off from what it shows on the dial, but so what. I think you can calibrate them, but i've never bothered, no reason to. if it says 78 and it's 81, i just turn it down to 77, done. they keep the temp deadlocked once they are set. i haven't really had experience with other heater other than Whisper brand which are total junk. just threw one in the garbage yesterday in fact. so i give it a thumbs up. and i was told directly by Eheim that they ARE sumbersible still. it's totally a UL regulation that they have to kind of say they aren't. don't sweat it. put those heaters down under like you always have!
