"Ebo Jager is coasting on the reputation established 20 years ago" |
I bought a 250 watt heater for a 30g tank about 3 years ago, at the time everybody was saying Ebo Jager was the best heater available. After driving all over town to find one, my first impression was that it was a pretty good heater. The heater was marked with maximum water level line which indicated that this particular heater is not submersible, great, it's got to be vertical and I'll have to remember to turn it off during water changes. Suprise number two was that the temperature dial was almost 5 degrees off, well that's why I have a thermometer anyway. So 3 years later the heater is still working, unlike the cheap heaters that get stuck in the on position and kill your fish after 3 months of use. I did find that the temperature dial can be calibrated even though the instructions don't make any mention of how to perform the calibration and there is a lot of conflicting information on rather the heater is actually submersible even though it's marked as not submersible.
My biggest gripe is that my heater will no longer bring a 30g tank above 78F, even though it's rated for a much larger aquarium. This makes it pretty useless as I had planned on keeping the tank as a hospital tank, but I usually like to keep my hospital tanks at 82F or higher. I don't think I'll buy another Ebo Jager, in my mind a quality product would have accurate documentation, quality materials and workmanship, robust design and consistent performance, |

"Quality has gone downhill" |
After being a former aquarium enthusiast, with several "meltdowns" with heaters, I understood why you never skimp on the heater. So when I first set up this 34 hex aquarium in 94, I wanted the best heater on the market. Ebo-Jager was highly recommended. This heater truly was the best I have ever used. Temperature NEVER fluctuated, and it worked flawless for 10 years until the heating coil burned out. I obviously replaced it with another Ebo-Jager, but it was not the same. The simple protected temperature adjustment slot was replaced with an outside dial, that needed callibration by the consumer to work properly. After figuring out how to work this, I had the tank temp stable... until 13 months later a meltdown occured (out of warrantee). I figured this was an anomoly, so purchased another ebo-jager. Within months, this heater couldn't hold the temp. A third was purchased, and this too failed a couple of years later. Appearantly ebo-jager was bought up by another company, and they must have changed the design and quality. 3 bad heaters is not a fluke. If you are considering them, think again. They are living off an OLD reputation. |

"Not near as great as they used to be; will not buy another one unless quality improves drastically" |
Have used them in a variety of tanks over the years, and they had performed extremely well. I set up a fish room this past summer, and bought ~30 Ebo Jaegers for all my tanks, varying in size from 50 watt to 300 watt heaters. I've taken at least 6 back due to malfunctions, ranging from not shutting off (water over 96 F. and still heating when I caught this one; was set for 77 and had been working for ~3-4 months), not being able to increase water temp. beyond 86 F. regardless of having the heater recalibrated 3 times by the LFS where I bought the heater from (200 watt heater in 50 gallon Discus tank - identical set-up in 6 other tanks, with no such issues), 4 degree (F.) fluctuation, and water damage leading to complete malfunction. I'm really gun shy now, checking water temp. 3-4 times a day, have repositioned all heaters so they are no longer submerged, and currently looking at another brand to replace yet another defective 3 month old Ebo Jaeger. Was a great product, but personally, will not trust one again, and wouldn't recommend them to anyone! |
