"Too noisy"
I purchased the 1700 and 10HF models and they are both too noisy for me to use. The humming/vibrating noise was much louder than I expected. Flow rate is good, but I can't deal with the noise. I should have read these reviews first.

"Fear for your life when you use these things!"
My brand-new Rio electrocuted me when I put my hands in the tank. Then it started smoking when I took it out and fiddled around with it.

I could have died. I brought it back and got something else, Big Al's didn't even question it. They knew.

This shoddy garbage should be illegal!!!!!!!!!!!

"So far so good"
We inherited our 1700 when we purchased our 80-gal. used tank setup. It had been unused in an empty tank in a garage for a couple of years when we bought it. Other than dried out suctions cups that needed replacing, it works great with out UGJs and has been quiet since we set up our system (just a few weeks.)

Of course, we may end up changing our review later on if it gets noisy, but so far so good!

Update 6/2008: the thing finally died on me during a filter media change--one second: working; next second: not. After much fiddling, we gave it up. We haven't replaced it yet.

The only thing that I found really annoying about it is that it was really difficult to change the filter media b/c the fitting was soo tight--it was really hard to get the base off.

"If you're going to use one, buy several backups"
I've used a number of powerheads, and this by far the WORST. First off, it's very very noisy. But the biggest problem is that it's unreliable, and will fail inevitably and randomly. Mine only lasted about 1 month before it died completely. I hope yours lasts longer.

"Don't buy this pump"
I had a RIO 600 in my 75 reef for six months. At that time it failed, leaking oil, smoke, and voltage into my tank killing tank occupants.

"Gets the job done.....I guess"
It has good power, but the noise is terrible. Cheaply made. I wouldn't recommend using in a display setup.

"Love my RIO"
I have two RIO 1700 for my UGJ and one for my wet/dry return sump. I have had the 1700 for about 3 months now and love them. I did not read these reviews before now. The last review was in 2005. So maybe I got the new improved model. Either that or I will come back later to change my story.

"#%$&"
I have a Rio 600, it is so noisy I refuse to use it even just to pump water into my tank. Any kind of back pressure on the impeller causes it to start chattering, and it gets worse once the pump is suctioned to glass because the glass seems to amplify the sound. In addition, any more than 1 foot of tubing attached to it causes it to bog down and renders it useles. In addition I have been shocked by rio pumps in the past, larger 1000 series ones I believe, terrible experience - stay away from these things.

"Piece of #%$&! ! !"
I bought the 600 powerhead and rite outta box it was noisyer that anhob filter with sand in the impellar. I had to totally remove the flow adjuster to get it to quiet down. The slightest back pressure make a terrible grinding noice. I will stick with maxi jets from now on great PH's

"VERY noisy pump."
After 2 months of use the Rio 2800ss just seemed to get louder with each passing day. Even upon taking the covers off and making sure impellers were clear the thing sounded like a b52. I think our fish are deaf by now! Replaced this with a Mag-Drive 7 and there is NO comparison. If we didn't hear the water going over the overflow wouldn't know the Mag-7 was even running! Would not recommend Rio pumps for indoor use..maybe outdoors in a pond next to an airport....

"Works for Me"
I use Rio 600's exclusivley. I don't know about any other models but the 600's work great for powering my undergravel plates. They are lower priced and they last so I'm more than happy with their performance. Just wanted to add that I'm still using 2 RIO 600s that were purchased in 2000. One has been running constanly for 7 years and the other I use as a pump for water changes. I don't see how anyone could expect better performance and life out of a $12 powerhead?

"Efficient, poorly made pumps"
If you believe the literature, RIOs are one of the most efficient pumps as far as wattage/ gph flow. Much better than a Mag of comparable flow. This can save considerable $$$ in electricity costs, where these pumps are used 24x7.

I own a 2100 in an UGJ system, and although it seems to pump the water okay-- it is by far the noisiest peice of aquarium equipment I have ever owned. I think my fish must be deaf by now. Cleaning the impeller quiets it down for no more than a day.

"I love my Rio"
I have a 600 that has been running a sponge non-stop for 5 years, never a hitch.

I like the clean look, they are easy to hide.

The little suction cup feet come off all the time and an they are noisy if they even come close to sticking out of the water. Fully submerged is a requirement, not an option. Rios are the only powerheads I own.
