"Get a cannister!"
Had two of these on my 46 corner tank. Bio-wheel stops after a few weeks. Too noisy. Inadequate filter job. I reset the tank with a Marineland C360 Cannister- like a dream come true!

"It works."
Review edited. Ended up ditching all the Penguin 350s (9 of them) in favor of ACs. Peace at last.

"Decent filter, couple bugs"
It has a decent outflow for the price and the 150 and up models allow you to put 2 cartridges back to back, or you can just stuff filter floss in there for surface area.

The Biowheel is a POS and always clogs up if you have hard water. It doesn't hold much bacteria and i personally find it useless.

They do run quiet though and i used one for over 2 years with no issues.

"Great filter for the price!"
Penguin 200- Easy to setup, got it cheap with petpals, works great in my 30 gallon! One problem filter bags don't fit great, but other than that great filter!

"Not impressed"
Just got a penguin 350 & always heard good reviews about the product & brand name, but I wasn't impressed. The body is cheap flimsy plastic(not sturdy)& this thing is very loud & annoying! Right out of the box, after assembling the intake tube,rinsing/inserting the cartridges & priming it - the impeller growled/buzzed! I am happy that Marineland is sending me a new impeller ! In the mean time, I've fixed the impeller noise (using vaseline)while waiting on the new one, but it still there is alot of splashing/gurgling sounds inside the filter(under lid) where the water comes in the filter from intake tube & impeller. Hopefully it will get better with the new impeller.

I own the cheap aqua-tech filters from walmart, but only because they are exactly the same as the penguins except they don't have the bio wheel. It does get noisy when the water drops, but it's an HOB what do you expect. It's easy to clean and works well. The bio insert that comes with it works just fine, you don't really need the xtra bio filter in my opinion. The carbon inserts work well but get a little pricey if you have a couple tanks, so I just cut the blue polyester stuff off, put in new carbon (cheap) and then with rubber bands attach polyester (cheap, you can get it at walmart too). (make sure it's chemical free). All in all it's pretty awesome. I even have one used which is pretty old that's running just as well as my new ones!

"Decent, but I'd stick with Aquaclear"
The filter seemed to work ok at first, but after a couple of months the bio-wheel just stopped turning. It has a pretty strong flow and is easy enough to take apart and clean. It works much better than the cheap tetra/whisper filters, but it is noticeably louder. In the end its a viable option for smaller aquariums and even better if you don't mind the splashing sound of water.

"Decent Power Filter"
I recently purchased one of the newer penguins, and in comparison to my old penguin 170 the new models are not as good. The plastic seems flimsier and less durable than on the old penguins. It still filters well, but I just think the older penguins are better :)

"best HOB you can buy"
I hear a lot of complaints, but when it comes down to it, most of the complaints pertain to every HOB filter, all HOB's are noisy, especially with water noise, the key it topping of, the penguins do the best job of filtering water in their class and the wet/dry feature of the biowheel is great to have, I hate that it is specific to the catridges and the only cheap way to go is to buy the aqua-tech filter media at wal-mart that are exactly the same, but contain less carbon, they are extremely easy to clean and I love the multi level intakes, also i move around my bio wheels to help cut down the cycle time in a new tank, I think if you are looking for something better you need to move up to a canister or sump

"350s Seem Great - 200s are terrible"
I purchased 2 of the 200s and 2 of the 350s. The 350s are used on my 125. The 200s are in use on two other aquariums. I've had nothing but trouble with the 200s. Every couple days the bio-wheels completely stop turning. I've used petroleum jelly in an attempt to alleviate the problem, but it hasn't helped. I worry that this might be killing off the bacterial population in the wheel itself since I don't watch it like a hawk to see if they've stopped turning. I'm able to play around with manually spinning the wheel a few times and adjusting the position of the filter pads to get them going again. The 350s, on the other hand, seem to do extremely well. I've never had the wheels stop turning. Both these filters use the "C" size media pads. These can add up pretty fast in replacement cost unless you just rinse and reuse them. I've read that they can be modified to be reusable though and may try that. Both the 350s and 200s have been quiet. I've had power failures and both have resumed operation without manual filling after power is restored. Hind sight being 20/20, I'd have not purchased the 200s.

"the only filter"
this is the only filter anyone should ever use , well let me change that a little , the bio wheel filter is the only one u should use , dont waste ur cash on canister filters, they dont give u near the bio filter that a bio wheel doese , under grave filters , verery bad , so stick with bio wheels
I have used these since they first came out years and years ago ,

"Can't hear myself think"
Good filter, but geez it is LOUD! I bought a canister to take its place. Distractingly loud even in my TV room. I got 2 penguin 350 for free and I traded one in for a new aqueon filter. It is dead silent. Bought a smaller penguin for my 20 gallon two years ago. Took it back... because it was LOUD. I don't care what kind of plastic cover they put over the biowheel. It doesn't help.

"The 350 is great, the 100 not so great..."
I have a Penguin Bio-wheel 350 and a Penguin Bio-wheel 100 on my 46 gallon. First off I'm very happy with my 350, it's efficient and mechanically quiet. Though it does sound like a small water fountain in my room if the water level is too low. The 100 kind of sucks though. The 3rd day it was setup I started having noise problems. It was so much louder than my 350! It was making a kind of laborious mechanical humming. I consulted the manual, and it suggested I check the impeller and make sure was no sand or gravel in it, and make sure everything was put together properly. I took a look at the impeller and the plastic sleeve on the tip was misshapen and on crooked. I reshaped the sleeve and put it on properly, so now there is barely any noise. But it was a bit of a pain, considering it was already assembled and ready to go once I bought it. My opinion is skipping the smaller single bio-wheel Penguins; they aren’t as well put together as the larger double bio-wheeled Penguins like the 200 or the 350.

----> I do wish the 350 would come with one customizable media basket, simular to the ones for the Emperor 400.

"Dont waste your money --> penguin 350"
WOrked good for about a week and then it starts sounding 10 times louder than anything i have ever heard. The pipe goes to far into the filter box and it grinds. Sounds like a car that cannot get the the shifter to go into first and is just grinding non stop. You can rig it to stay working for an hour or so by jamming something between the tube and filter box. Overall this product is #%$& and would never recommend it. I am actually very angry over how much #%$& this filter is.
