"Great looking sand when its clean..."
So I've had this setup in my growout tank for a little while now. It was very difficult to clean. Luckily, I only had to use a small amount for my 10gal, so it was less work then for those who have to wash 15-20lbs of it. However, it was quite monotonous.

There isn't too much in the way of black substrate out there to choose from, let alone black sand. I originally wanted the 3M product, but once that was ruled out, I opted for this. For those that like black sand, it looks great. And it actually isn't as "rough" as everyone says it is. I guess if you had soft bellied fish, maybe it might be an issue, but it was fine for my purposes. This stuff looks great in some African setups, but especially in planted tanks.

I would recommend this product to anyone looking for black substrate... Just be prepared to spend quite a while washing.

"good substrate"
it's good if you want something dark, fairly easy to keep clean, doesn't get up into the water column which is a big plus.

This stuff is slag and can have heavy metals and impurities, it's also sharp and can hurt fish. Stay away.
Use pool fitler sand or if you need black find a 3M colorquartz dealer.

"I've used better for less"
This product is just too overpriced for what you get. It is a dirty product and you need to rinse it many times. I used quickcrete play sand and I didn't have as much problems cleaning it. However, it is good and brings out the colors of your fish. It would be great in a dark themed setup.

"too much money"
Rinsing this sand takes forever no matter what method you use. Very expensive as well

"messy and costly"
This stuff is so expensive, and very messy. I had to rinse mine 6 times. Seriously. And it still gets things sooty sometimes. Black sand is a cool look, but this product is not worth the cost.

Next time I will use that 3M stuff.

"Looks good.... but no buffering."
I bought the Tahitian Moon black sand for my 20g growout tank. Luckily it was for a small tank, because it took me forever to wash it. Others have mentioned that it seems easier to clean with more recnetly purchased bags. I bought mine probably 6 months ago, so that may be the case. Anyway, it definitely looks good, especially if you're used to all white substrate like the Aragonite I used in my 90g tank. However, if you're keeping African Cichlids and want the high pH, you're out of luck since it doesn't buffer. I guess you could mix with some Aragonite or something if you wanted that look. It's decent, but also a bit pricey.

"The Best Sand On The Market"
I have being using it for a little over a year now. It was easy to put in and clean. It brings out the color of my fish and it still looks the same as when I first put it in. Plus it doesn’t wear out like gravel it maintains its color and texture!!!

"Great sand"
I purchased 60lb for my 90 gallon tank. This thing cost an arm and a leg, so cleaning was pretty difficult! You need to make sure it is well rinsed before you use it or you will get cloudy water. You will also lose about a handful of sand while cleaning because some will float to the top (you don't want that stuff), some will slowly sing (you don't want that either). So you need to clean it good to get the good stuff.

"Awesome stuff"
When I upgraded from my 55 gal to a 125 gal I switched from gravel to this and I'm glad I did. The fish love it and it helps bring out their colors. Pretty easy to clean too.

im so glad i spent the extra money. this stuff is awesome! it makes the fish jump out and look beautiful. i get just as many compliments on my tahitian moon as i do on the fish, and people love my fish!
as far as cleaning goes, it cleans easily. it took me only a couple rinses per batch just to get the little bits of foreign matter. once in the tank there was absolutely no clouding.
from what i understand there is "old" and "new" tahitian sand. i guess the new stuff is easier to clean than the old. i must have got the new sand because cleaning was a breeze.
i love this sand!!!

"Super-Easy to use!"
I just purchased this product a week ago and I rinsed it very quickly and put it in my tank. It was the easiest substrate I have ever cleaned. I probably didn't even have to rinse to use. Makes for a great looking substrate, just remember to have a good amount of lighting, as the black doesn't reflect light like alot of other substrates do.

"Looks great, pain to clean..."
It made a huge, black mess in the white tub...

...but after that, it looks great. It does however show up alot of debris, so make sure you clean often.

The price is a bit high, but it's worth it.
