"Nice product, looks good in the tank"
I hear people complaining about how hard it is to clean before putting it in. It is no harder than any other sand. I took the time to rinse it and it only clouded up the water the first day. After I cleaned the waste off it on maintenance day and stirred it up to release any trapped gases, it caused no cloudiness at all. As for raising the pH, it did for a few days, but didn't hold. I added some tuffa rocks as decor and now maintain 8.1 consistently.

I recommend it

"Excellent Substrate"
I must say this stuff is very effective. I really didn’t have much trouble cleaning it, no more than what I expected from a sand type substrate. The cost was $18.00 for a 20 lbs. bag I purchased five for my 125 gallon tank, I guess that where cost becomes a big factor. As for water quality, the substrate did cloud my tank for the first 2 days, in my opinion I would say your filter will play a big part in this. Finally, this substrate did buffer my water to 8.0, after 2 days I recheck the ph level and came out with the same results.

"It doesnt promise what it says"
This sand does not maintain a high pH on the long run. Its expensive and the only real positive benefit is that it looks nice on a mbuna aquarium. I dont recommend this product

"Too expensive but I went for it anyway"
Cloudy upon first use. Made of mess of my bathroom while I was rinsing it in the tub with buckets.

The black and white particles look kind of unnatural.

It doesn't do a very good job of buffering pH and it's too expensive.

"Never again"
Supposed to buffer to a Cichlid PH butr I was lucky to hold 7.6 Filthy stuff to rinse out and 2 weeks later I still see cloudy water. I would have expecter better for $40 for a 50# bag. Pulling it out this weekend and going with plain black gravel.

"Cloudy + Low pH"
I used this stuff on my second cichlid tank. Takes about 2x longer to clear up than the Eco-Complete (even after a thorough rinse - something you don't do with eco-complete).

For those who are planning on keeping ph above 8 -- DO NOT BUY -- i had problems getting my pH stabilized at 8.2 -- used a lot of salts + buffers. Something that takes a lot of time + money!

I am goign to stick with eco-complete!

"not shelled out to be the best"
this product does vot hold up to its standards. my ph will not rise beyond 7.6. can the manufacturers of substrates make a product that will do what it says?.

"Nicer than gravel"
Looks much nicer than gravel and is much easier to keep clean. It did cloud the tank for about 24 hours when I first put it in, and I had to remove a bunch of little plastic pieces that were mixed in with the sand. All in all a great product..

"Gets the job done"
Rinse as much as you can before adding it to your tank, this stuff is cloudy. Other than that it keeps the ph and hardness perfect.

I thought I had rinsed it enough to make sure there was going to be no cloudyness. That wasnt the case. Took about a week to clear up. All in all though, I love how it looks in my tank with the Holey rock I have.

"I'd purchase again"
I bought two 20 lb. bags to go in a small 30 gallon. First thing you'll notice is how much particulate falls from the bag when you empty it into a bucket for rinsing.

I filled up one bucket, dispensed about a quater of it into another, and rinsed for about ten minutes each time. Afterwards, I dumpted it in the tank, filled it with water, and ran a diatom filter for thirty minutes...crystal clear (as far as crystal clear goes with our well water).

The ph remains around 7.5, not exactly where I'd want it for Cichlids, but...

Overall, not bad. If nothing better is available, this stuff will do.

"Buffers better than my Florida Crushed Coral"
I was iffy on purchasing this substrate due to these reviews, but i went through with the purchase. Was not disapointed. Worked out buffering better than the crushed coral in my other tank. I was looking for the Rift Lake Authentic, but the do not make that anymore? A little pricey ($40 for a 50 lbs bag). Cleanup is a pain, but when is rinsing any substrate easy. Tank was cloudy for about 4-5 days. Everything is fine now, great buffer IMO.

"Not The Best"
I wasn't thrilled with the quality of this substrate; too much a hype on paper. Until you purchase a 40lbs bag and go thru the pain of washing it, then you'd understand.

It did buffer to a 8.0PH with clody water but after several weeks, the PH went down as the water cleared up.

Would suggest y'all to go straight to crushed coral substrate and don't believe the marketing hype.
