An integrated trickle chamber filled with C-Nodes is where biological filtration is super charged for fast and efficient nitrification. Mechanical filtration is performed by a dual layer of foam and polyester, and is easily removed for quick cleaning. The patented recirculation grid enhances mechanical filtration when the flow rate is reduced. A convenient chemical insert basket directs water flow to maximize toxin removal. Maintaining only one stage at a time will preserve beneficial bacterial, resulting in a stress free environment, while ensuring aquarium water stays clear.
Each filter is equipped with Fluval Poly/Foam, Activated Carbon, C-nodes and drip tray pad.

Fluval C3 Power Filter; 153 gph; ideal for use with aquariums up to 50 US gallon (190L); 7" Tall X 7" Wide X 4.75" front to back; 2.75" needed behind the aquarium.
Fluval C4 Power Filter; 264 gph; ideal for use with aquariums up to 70 US gallon (265L); 8.75" Tall X 8.3" Wide X 6.2" front to back; 3.75" needed behind the aquarium.
"Successfully combining/refining the best elements of other HOBs=the best overall HOB unit Available"
The C4 is effectively an updated Aquaclear 70 with a price that reflects this.
Media fits in a mostly sealed fashion therefore allowing for much less bypass than many units. A relatively large foam pad is backed by finer media in a self contained cassette. Each filtration compartment is accessible with either minimal or no disruption/hassle of other media. The modular access is very well thought out. The motor and the impeller are incredibly easy to access. The flow rate control is truly effective.
A wet/dry component is incorporated for bio filtration fusing the Aquaclear Biomax approach with the best aspects of a biowheel while eliminating some of the (few, but) potential biowheel drawbacks.
The bottom line is that even though this is a "newer" unit, it is in truth an Aquaclear 70 that has been modified to address any of the weaknesses in the design of the AC 70 while adopting the strengths of many competing units (and also implementing said strengths in a way that eliminates their potential weaknesses). Rolf C. Hagen Inc. did it's homework and made a great HOB filter with the Fluval C Series.
My only significant complaint is that there are not any "C5" or "C6" units produced.
I had bought a C3. Putting it together was simple, works like a charm! Only thing for me, but isn't THAT big of a deal is that it doesn't self prime, but man oh man this thing is QUITE and has an adjustable rate of flow! Has 5 stages of filtration and you can really tell they are all do their job in an over populated tank of African Cichlids. Will be buying a C4 soon for my other tanks.
UPDATE: The C3 was and still is running GREAT!
But I had bought a C4 to take its and another filters place on my 40Gal, and it is AMAZING!
Only think that isnt a 9 for me is the Ease of use, after water changes, I have to fill it up with a cup several times for it to get a good vacuum going. But really other that that.. it is AMAZING! One fo the best HOB's I have used.
Great filter for someone who is looking at a unique way to filter a tank. The C4 is a little pricey as compared to an AC70, but the filtering capability is still fantastic. Overall a great HOB that I would not hesitate to recommend.
