Angels Plus Sponge Filters are carefully designed for optimum flow rate and the ability to grow dense nitrifying bacteria colonies. Keep in mind that flow rate can be too fast for a sponge filter and a faster flow does not necessarily mean a better filter. All foam material is not created equal. Some contain biocides (poisons). Many have fire retardants on them. Others are simply made from a material that does not promote nitrifying bacteria growth. They may not kill your fish, but the beneficial bacteria, will not grow properly. Our foam is chosen for its suitability as a medium for nitrifying bacteria. We have tested dozens of materials before choosing these. We've used them in our own hatcheries for almost 30 years. They have proven to be the best for raising our valuable fish. We have sold over 125,000 of them since 1989 when we first started offering them to the public.
‘Active Filters’ are also available. These are taken from our disease-free tanks and contain a large, healthy colony of nitrifying bacteria and other beneficial microorganisms.
Angel's Plus is well known to me through the years I've been in the hobby. I just received the filter, so I will not be able to give a complete review. I will say that Angel's Plus has prompt shipping and include a rather large sized sample of their custom foods if requested with order. Angel's Plus filters are similar to Poret cube filters in shape. Angel's Plus use a slate base as opposed to a tile base. These filters are solid and will not fall over. These use a standard round lift tube with a clever drilled hole with a guide for the airline tubing. Angel's Plus offers various sizes and pore sizes. I purchased the 5" one. They also offer seeded sponges at a slightly higher cost. The sponge is attached to slate base which may make it more difficult to clean. I hope to provide an updated review after use. In my oppinion these filters are supper simple which makes them easy to set up - just insert airline tubing into the guide hole.
