"good filter"
I have used the largest filter for the past two + years. I have had no problems with it and it keeps the water in my 40Gal breeder tank crystal clear. I keep a heavy load in that tank. Changing the filter pads is easy, I remove them and spray them off weekly and replace them, and new filter pads are installed about every 6 weeks. Every three months I clean out the entire filter with the exception of the Bio stars, they get rinsed in tank water. I have had no problems with the support legs they have been twisted in and out at least a dozen times by now. The filter still runs quietly. I hope it keeps on going forever.

"A little tricky"
After reading the reviews on here, I was skeptical about buying these filters, but the LFS gave me a great deal knocking $20 off each filter. So I purchased 2 of the SmartFilter 55s.

I took into account all the negative reviews and went about trying to make this filter work without repeating the same problems that have been reported.

The major concern with these filters is that upon getting heavy the adjustable legs collapse and the filter tips down and water drains out the back. This is a major problem with a simple fix, I used a spacer to keep the filter level preventing the legs from collapsing.

As for the filters making lots of noise, the only problem I have had was a broken more clip. This made a lot of noise and vibration. Rena sent me a replacement part and the filter runs smooth and stays very quiet.

Overall these filters do a great job. If you do not mind making a few spacers to keep the filters level, give them a try.

"Shockingly poor quality from a good company."
I've used Rena Filstar canisters for a number of years with great success, so when I decided to set up a cichlid tank I thought I'd give the Smartfilter a try.

Setup.
The setup is straightforward, but a little tricky. You have to get the cartridge holders set just right for them to lock in place, and that is sometimes difficult to do. On the bottom of the filter are adjustable offsets to keep the fiter level when hanging on the tank. These are held to the selected setting via friction. I had no problem setting them.

Use.
After about an hour, water was running everywhere! The offsets couldn't hold the weight of the water in the filter box and collapsed. I ended up slding a book between the back of the tank and the filter as a makeshift solution.

Final Straw
Two weeks later, I notice the laminate floor under the stand is warping. Water was slowly leaking out of the seam for the pump chamber and dripping to the floor, then seeping under the laminate. It wasn't leaking fast enough to notice a puddle, but was slowly causing damage.

Trashed the filter and went to a 2-stage Filstar.

Be SMART and stay away from the SMARTfilter.
