Gray Coast Calcite is an all natural calcite substrate for all types of marine, reef and tropical aquaria. Its chemical composition will assist in stabilizing calcium and alkalinity while preventing large pH declines. Simply rinse before use to remove any residual dust. Unlike competing "wet" gravels, Gray Coast is sold dry: this bag contains 35% more gravel than a bag of wet gravel of equal weight. These "wet" gravels are marketed to give one the impression that they contain living, microscopic animals when in fact they only contain common bacteria. Dry or wet, there are bacteria on every substrate. If one is concerned with shortening the aquarium cycle time for a new system, then the use of a product designed for that particular purpose would be more appropriate (such as Seachem's Stability).
Well, you have to rinse it alot to get the dust off. Best way is to wash in small batches. When doen, use like a water clarifier to keep the tank water clear. Overall, it looks stellar and for the work involved, it really isnt all that bad!
I used one bag for a 70 gallon tank, just wanted a cool black look and some extra buffering power. It took forever to rinse and I was unable to remove all the gray stuff before adding it to the tank. It clouded the water pretty bad for a couple days. Not terribly attractive, looks kind of ashy. They sell this as a marine substrate but I think it's way too ghetto looking for that. My cichlids do look cool above it though.
Its not that expensive if you order it online around $15-$17 a bag, but yes there is cheaper stuff out there that looks just as good. The cleaning takes forever, honestly it took about an hour to clean 3 bags for my 55gallon tank. Once its all clean and its in the tank, it looks very good.
I may have just gotten a bad batch but this product seemed to have two sizes in the bag. The particles were either too big for my shelldwellers to manage or so fine as to be more like dust. It took forever to wash as most of the dutlike particles washed away to form a grey mud in my garden.
