Males are generally yellow, with mild variances from one location to the next but are rather consistent within any single population. Dominant males from the eastern side of the lake have dark ventral fins. Females are silver with black bars and lines. Males are very territorial and aggressivley defend their territories against any intruders. This species, like all Tropheops species, feeds by tearing off filamentous algal strands from the substrate.
