This Tropheops species is usually found among Vallisneria beds close to rocks. It feeds bt gleaning algae from plant fronds and rocks. It is one of a only a few mbuna that excavate craters in the mud for a spawning site. Males are aggressively territorial and court females that cluster in groups of a dozen or more.
