This Tropheops species has a deep and elongated body. Males valiantly defend their territories from any intruders. Territories are marked by a small hole beneath several small rocks at its center. Males are purplish-blue with a white dorsal fin. It derives its name ("Fin Spot") from a dark blotch, covering most of the soft portion of the dorsal fin.
