Males are blue with a black band running through the dorsal fin. Females are entirely bright yellow. In the wild, it is not unusual for large schools of foraging females to migrate en masse through the upper regions of the habitat. This species, like all Tropheops species, feeds by tearing off filamentous algal strands from the substrate.
