Mbuna Setup

Postby AV8TOR » Wed Aug 07, 2019 8:42 pm

I’d like to bounce this off you folks. My 75 is all set up and cycling now. I have always loved Saulosi and in doing some searching I saw where sp. Hara is okay. I would also like to know for a third if I can add sp. Hongi SRT? Thanks

I would not mix any of these since they all have blue bars.

I did try hara with one of the darker blue barred fish like saulosi and the hara never colored well. Survive but not thrive.

Okay got it but this is where I first read you were okay with the Hara. I’ll go Acei and Rusty then. Thanks

I guess I am even confused from the 75 gal cookie cutter. Here it seems Salousi is ok with Hongi. I’m confused.

For my personal experience, I did have them together for a couple of years. They did survive, but they never colored well. Once I moved them to a separate tank with yellow labs they were brilliant. Live and learn.

They will survive and they will not crossbreed, if that is your question.

IME the blue barred fish color their best if kept separately.

Yes thanks again. You mention blue bared but what about gold like the Cynotilapia sp. "Lion" Magunga?
Sorry to bother you but much appreciated

Never tried it but Lion Magunga seems like a blue barred fish with a yellow blaze.

I would expect a yellow barred fish like flavus to work, but also never tried the combination.
