Ammonia in tap water!!

Postby farzadkavari » Thu Dec 20, 2018 5:20 pm

Hello all,

I recently noticed that my tab water has 1-2PPM Ammonia in it. I know that's pretty high which makes the water changes complicated.. :( I tested with API test-kit that's not expired and pretty new. Does anyone else have same issue out there? I called my water company and waiting to hear back. What's the best way about going to change 25%-50% WC? Ammonia in tank currently at 0.10PPM or less but not 0. Please advise on how to handle this issue.... I use Prime when doing water changes.

Prime should neutralize it in the tank until your water company can fix it. Drink/cook with bottled water meanwhile I'm thinking.

I had the same problem with ammonia and nitrites. I double dosed prime until the water company fixed the problem.

If your water company is using chloramine to disinfect the water, it is going to have some ammonia in it. Use a good quality water conditioner like SeaChem Prime or Safe. Both products remove ammonia as well as chlorine/chloramine. They will also bind nitrite and nitrate making them less toxic.

I think the test results for "normal" tap water with chloramines is .25 PPM. If there is 1PPM or more I would call the water company.
