Matching water change temperature

Sun Jun 21, 2020 2:17 pm

Hi all.

Firstly, what tank temperature fluctuation do you allow for when changing water? I have seen of YouTube videos that a fluctuation of 2 decrees Celcius is ok for Malawi cichlids...is this true?

For those of your who do water changes on large tanks using the garden hose, how do you prevent temperature fluctuations when doing substantial water changes?

Thanks!

You minimize temp impact by not doing large water changes if you can only use cold water. Beware of using a garden hose...a hose for an RV for potable water would be safer.

Many of us use a faucet that can mix the hot/cold to match the temp and a Python.

Because this makes it easy...if I change 75% of the water and the new water is 2 degrees fahrenheit colder...the overall tank temp does not change noticeably.

The other thing people do is have a storage tank. Fill it with cold and allow it to come to room temperature before using it for water changes.

At the start of each week I fill up all the water I need for the weeks water changes in containers. That way they will be at room temp.
