Stocking Advice Mbuna Tank

Postby ldrmanic » Thu May 28, 2020 4:51 pm

Hi all. I am new to the forum and welcome your advice on stocking my 75 gallon all Mbuna tank. I set the tank up last December and all fish are between 2-3.25 inches or so. Currently in the tank are:

3 yellow labs
3 ace cichlids
3 cobalt blue cichlids
3 Rusty cichlids
2 bumblebees
2 labidocromus clown labs
2 melanochromus auratus
1 red zebra
1 demasoni
1 Kenya
1 blue yohanni
22 total mbunas

I heard to stay away from the more aggressive bumblebees (though mine are not aggressive yet), auratus, demasoni and Kenya. If you were me, how would you round this assortment out? The only issue I have currently is my large aces cichlid will not leave a female yellow lab alone, wants to mate with her. I think I am male heavy. Only females I know of for sure are one rusty and one yellow lab. I can't tell for sure what the rest are. Thanks!

What is your goal? I like mixed gender mbuna so I would do 4 species with 1m:4f of each.

1m:4f yellow labs
1m:4f cobalt a.k.a. Metriaclima callainos or acei
1m:4f rusties
1m:4f clown labs a.k.a. Labidochromis chisumulae
125G Borleyi, Multipunctata
75G Demasoni, Msobo, Lucipinnis
75G Calvus, Similis, Petricola

I wanted to stock it a little higher, but no more than 30 fish. Do you think I have too many different types of mbunas in the tank? I just wanted suggestions on which to buy more of based on compatibility. But I do think your suggestion is the way to go ultimately, once I can confirm the gender of what is currently in the tank.

I would not go higher than 20. The existing stock can be expected to result in aggression against the females which you are already seeing.

Having four or more females/male is how you keep the aggression under control.

The other option is to go all male (a difficult tank) and remove all females and all duplicates and all fish that look alike. I like 12 individuals in an all-male tank...they do better with a little more room.
