Postby mdaniel1984 » Tue Apr 14, 2020 8:14 pm

Picked up this beautiful creature from ..... PetSmart... I know.. I know

But the store is good priced but has a good assortment of Africans.

Does anyone know what spices this is? Right now he's the only one out of 15 fish that's "Pacing"

Thank you

Tropheus duboisi from Tanganyika. They do sell them at Petsmart now. The juveniles are a very attractive black with lined up white dots, but juveniles lose the spots and look different as adults, yours is starting to lose it's spots as it grows.

They do best in a group of their own species. May do okay with Mbuna, but sometimes don't look their best. Similar to Mbuna, but Tropheus are more likely to get sick, Tropheus are more challenging.

Sick in what way?...

I've spent a good deal of money on my stock and if I'm going to have a sick fish.... I may need to pass.

Very prone to bloat. Gotta be very careful on what you're feeding them. Strict veggie diet.

I feed everyone Hikari Cichlid Food.

I been thinking of trying to put lettuce or spinish in for them to nibble on.

Should I keep with the pellet or mix in some greens with pellet?

The health issues are not just feeding...even if you feed well stress can have them getting bloat more easily than other fish, except maybe demasoni.

Part of keeping them stress free is having them with a large group of their species.

Pacing or just very active???

We have tropheus duboisi, tropheus ikola and tropheus red chipimbi.

I find the tropheus to be very very active in a tank when compared to very active fish. The only thing we've had one die from is.....a case of the whoop ass. The food ours gets is northfin cichlid formula and xtreme. Our fry are raised on xtreme nano. I never bought into the...gotta be strict veggie diet. They get fed what all the rest are fed, northfin cichlid, xtreme peewee and extreme nano.
We've also found ours to like a lot of current in their tanks.

Here is one of our tropheus duboisi males, just for example.

Beautiful!!!

I actually had seaweed wrap in the house from sushi, created a DIY veggie hanger and he loves it and so does the rest!

Pacing has stopped he's acting normal now, must have been nervous or just trying to figure out he has a huge home now
