Malawi mix question

First, apologies if this has been asked previously, I've searched a number of ways, but have not found the answer.

I have a 180 6x2x2 gal tank which will be a Malawi tank. I want to have Peacocks, and Haps. Can a set up work where all the peacocks are male, but there are a mix of Haps? For instance, I'd like to have a shoal of Deep Water Haps in with them. Does this present an issue from either a cross breeding perspective or extra aggression in the peacock colony?

I'm also planning to house some Yellow Labs in the tank as well, and research seems to show they generally are ok with Peacock and Haps.

Thanks

Yes I would expect the haps to cross breed with the peacocks and also cause aggression issues unless there are deep water hap females in such a large number that there would end up being 4 females for every male in the tank.

It does seem to work to have a mixed gender group of yellow labs or acei with peacocks and haps however.

Could acei give you the look you seek as a substitution for the deep water haps?

Thanks - they might just do the trick.

Some haps will for sure cross breed with peacocks.

For examples, I've had a Copadichromis borleyi Mbenji breed with an OB Peacock female... not sure if the eggs were fertile or not, but I've witnessed the action.

Thanks jcover. Good to know. Determining a mix for Malawi is not as straightforward as I hoped/desired. Fortunately my local shop has a great selection, and members of my club also have nice fish.

When trying to aim for a fully stocked tank, should I double the numbers compared to the 75 cookie cutter, or is only going 50% more the better option?

For mixed gender 72" tank shoot for 5 species and1m:4f of each.

For all-male 72" tank shoot for 18 individuals.

You are going half/half? So like 9-12 acei and 9 haps and peacocks?

Agreed with DJRansome.

18 all males for a 72" tank seems to be the magic number.

Thanks on the numbers. I'm going with roughy half/half. Male Peacocks with Yellow Labs and Acei. Will start off with a few more than 18 so I can cull any that turn out to be female or one that just won''t work with the others.

If you are still doing yellow labs as well, I don't think half half works, unless you will do 1m:4f each of labs and acei, then 8 haps and peacocks.
