Tank temp

Sat Jun 29, 2019 7:36 am

I'm having skittle heat wave here in NY. I normally keep my tank at 79 deg. But for the past 2 days it's been around 82 Deg. I have my canopy open and the lids open and the room has a powerful ceiling fan. At this temp should I be worried and go out and get a small fan to clip on to canopy and blow across the water or should the fish be fine? If I'm fine now at what temp should I start to take more action?

I would not let the temp get above 86 degrees. Increase surface agitation because oxygen is lower when temp is higher. Consider air conditioning the room or moving the tank to an air conditioned room.

Back before I had AC I just opened tank lids, had ceiling fan running and lowered water level to allow filter returns to agitate the water better and my fish did just fine. I did however use egg crate (lighting grid) to fill the opening left by the tank lids to avoid fish jumping out.

Some people do use small fans clipped to canopy plus the above suggestions to help.

As stated, surface agitation is the key. We've had tanks run at 90-92 degrees for months with no problem. The fish will become more active and eat more with the increased temperature.

Actually I feel bad for you if you haven't had a/c, forget about the fish. Where I am in NY it's been unbearable the last few days.

High temps all year round here. But I practically live in a/c as outside is unbearable.
