Trewavasae with Kenyi in 180gal

Postby ken31cay » Thu Jun 06, 2019 9:40 am

Hi all,

I'm thinking about changing my 180gal to an mbuna tank. My local pet store right now has Kenyi and Trewavarsi chilumba in stock so my plan was to get the following:

1Male/7Female Kenyi
10 Trewavarsi chilumba

Does anyone know if Trewavarsi are aggressive enough to be compatible with Kenyi?

Thanks,
Kenny

Yes, but you don't usually need to have aggressive with aggressive among mbuna. Go 1m:7f on the labeotropheus as well.

Personally I would not stock kenyi.

Hi DJ,

Thanks for the response. Why wouldn't you stock Kenyi?

I could also add yellow labs in there - do you know if either of those would breed with yellow labs?

You don't want fish that look alike. Yellow lab male and kenyi male are both yellow.

Kenyi take up 2 common mbuna color slots...IMO there are more interesting and less aggressive blue barred mbuna.

What are the dimensions of the tank? Stock by length, not gallons.

The tank is 72"x24"x24". I pulled the trigger and now have 1 male & 10 female Kenyi, 11 Trewavasae Chilumba - can't tell yet if male or female. All these new fish are about 2". There's only one pet store here in Cayman and I actually cleaned out their Trewavasae, and there's no other mbuna at the store besides a few more Kenyi, so I can pick up another male if I need to.

So far their behavior is cool to watch, I'm excited about this tank as they reach breeding age. I guess now I should also change my signature.

Maybe acei with them. Shoot for 25 fish in a 72" tank with mixed gender.

You do NOT want more than one male kenyi/tank.

Somehow I figured only one male Kenyi...one it is then. Unfortunately I have no other option then to have just 2 species for now. My africans supplier in Georgia only does peacocks/haps/tangs. I tried 4 other suppliers in the region but they're not able to go through the USDA Aphis steps that the Cayman Islands agriculture dept requires for me to import the fish. No problem, within the next 6 months or so my pet store should have some different mbuna in stock
