Can a female Malawi cichlid have an egg spot?

Yes, the presence or absence of an egg spot is not always an indicator of the sex of the fish.

Yes....Yes they do. Here is a pic of a pair of labeotropheus fuelleborni. The ob female in the front and the blue male behind her. As stated, sexing african cichlids by the presence or absence of egg spots doesn't work.
