Cichlid Genetics - Breeding

Postby Kanorin » Fri Apr 11, 2008 2:05 pm

Last night I was thinking about the genetics of breeding cichlids and maybe some more experienced breeders on this site might be able to answer my questions.

When most fish enthusiasts stock their tanks, they purchase fish of the same species from a single source. This often results in brother and sister fish of the same species being housed together. These fish breed and then the offspring might be sold to another breeder and so on. After a few generations this leads to a highly inbred line of fish.

Are there any consequences of several generations of aquarium inbreeding to cichlids? Are they more prone to disease? Is their coloration effected? Is there any limit to the number of generations of inbreeding that can occur in a line of fish before any adverse side effects are seen?

Not that I'm trying to quash your topic, but here's a great recent thread with loads of information about inbreeding.
