Any specific light that I should buy for my tank?

Postby edhoo » Mon Apr 07, 2008 2:35 am

It just dawned on me that I don't have to use the fluorescent lights that came with my aquarium. I was looking online and say that cichlids don't like very bright lights. What do you guys use, and can you guys post some pictures of what you use so I can get a feel for what it would look like before I go out and buy the bulb.

I have never seen my fish that are in show tanks have any adverse reactions to bright lighting once settled in and aclimated. I would suggest using the light that best shows off your fish and overly dim lighting will not do that in many cases.

Are your fish acting very skitish? Is there any reason to believe that the bright light is bothering them?

Aquarium lighting can be a little $ and I would rather spend my money on something else. If it was a planted would be very different story.

Maybe use something to shade sections of the tank rather than worring about switching out the lighting etc?

Mine works fine, I just want one with a blueish tint. Isn't it called Marine Glow? And it works for a Cichlid tank too? Or is it Aqua Glow?

The marine glow will have more a a blue tint than the aqua glow. I have the power glow in my tank. It is not a harsh bright white light like the kind that come with your strip light. Any of those three will do. Although I would go with the power or marine. Go to your LFS and ask to see the differnce of the three. I am sure they would be happy to put each bulb in a strip light to show you.

So the marine glow won't have any negative effect on my tank since its mainly for saltwater setups?

No. Could affect algae growth, but won't harm the fish.
