What filter media do most use in Fluval 406? Carbon?

Postby Toddsnake » Sun Mar 31, 2019 9:17 pm

Getting my Fluval 406 setup for the first time and it came with 2 different filtration trays that both use the little bags of carbon. Is the carbon really needed? I have seen some videos on Youtube that suggest using it only if you are wanting to filter out medications that had previously been add to the water...? Any thoughts...? Should I get some more of the Fluval Biomax media instead...? Some videos showed using lava-rock in one of the trays...? What do you guys use?
Thanks for any advice! :)

Carbon is not required and could even be a bad thing, as it is being implicated as a contributory factor to Hole in the Head disease.
I use non-porous ceramics in the bottom, then sponges, then porous media (any) at the top. Then ‘polishing pads’ if you want them.

no need for carbon. There are many better options for media in canisters. Manufacturers like carbon as it needs replacing regularly and therefore is a revenue stream...

I don't use the 406 (use FX6) and I use Seacham Matrix in all 3 baskets - the top basket also includes a course and polishing filter. I'd use as much media as I could get in there.

Thanks for the replies! Left the carbon out, bought more Fluval BioMax. Thinking about getting some of the Biohome media, anyone using it? Opinions?
Thanks
