Sunsun Hw304B - Space for Biohome media

I do not yet own a Sunsun filter yet and I am curious how much volume each filter tray is. Diameter and depth is okay. I would like to get 3-4 kg of Biohome Ultimate in there and concerned that two trayes won't be enough.
TIA

I just got mine a few days ago. I plan on using Seachem Matrix in mine tho. Still awaiting for it to arrive (taking forever). Going to set it up the Pondguru way (lowest basket - Mech. top 3 baskets Matrix).

Super Bob as Matrix is what I am looking to us as well. I would be curious how much weight you get in each tray. Lately I’m thinking of using two SunSun 302’s instead of one 304. I will clean them on different cycles.

Ok, so I want to put out the disclaimer regarding this canister. I really hope it works out for you.

Some things to be aware of beforehand:

1. Filter hose fits VERY tightly on quick disconnect shutoff valve. The intake and outflow on shutoff are weak at the elbow, meaning if you continuously twist hose or try wrestling them on and off, there is a good chance plastic will crack (happened to me). You can get new disconnect shutoff valves from eBay for like $8-$9. You may want to consider a way of reinforcing the elbows (possibly bond some marine-grade epoxy around the elbow for added reinforcement, or plumbers tape.

2. The plastic wings that snap head in place are flimsy. Handle with care. Also make sure to put vasoline on o-ring before operation, or else it will leak like a MF in weeks, not months or years.

I had a nice setup as far as filtration: I used ceramic pre-filter at bottom, course and medium sponge on bottom tray, with some fine sponge at bottom of 2nd tray with a mix of Biomax and Hydroton in the first two trays.

Mother Earth Hydroton is by far and away the best value bio media I have used to-date. Tons of surface area at a fraction of the cost of industry products. It really is phenomenal and at around $20 and free shipping per 10L on eBay a great price.

Biohome is a rip off. If you are going to buy a sub $60 canister, I don’t get putting in overpriced media.

If you have issues with HW304B, you may want to consider Fluval 306. It of course is 4x more expensive, but also 4x less a hassle and better at circulating water through your tank imo.

Good luck!

Hey! So I bought a 4 Liter tub of Matrix. I have not had a chance to get this filter up and running yet as I have to complete my DYI aquarium stand. Almost finished except for paint (been really rainy here in So Cal). Anyway, back to the Sunsun, I really think it's going to eat all 4L of the Matix between 3 trays (trays 2 thru 4). We'll see but if it does, I'm ok with that.

Thanks for the heads up. Yes, I've read all the perils people have gone through with sunsuns. Not to discount any of the good points you bring up, but I will try to address these and discuss how I plan to handle these known issues and try to lessen them from happening. If nothing else, it will start the discussion and people can bounce ideas off each other.

1) It's usually nice and sunny (warm) here in So Cal, I plan to place the hoses out in the sun to soften them up to where they are pliable. If this is not enough, boil water and dip them in there until pliable. If all else fails, get out the heat gun. Once on, they are set and forget!

2) Yes, I saw where this was the last straw for IFG (Youtuber). I actually labeled the release lever as I think it is backward to standard convention. No Vaseline for me. I bought some of this. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07C3 ... UTF8&psc=1

I have bought an extra o-ring seal and impeller off amazon just in case.

Thanks for the heads up on the Mother Earth Hydroton. I'll check it out.
