External filter media setups

Postby Chrislisk » Sun Feb 21, 2021 7:34 pm

After reading a thread about removing carbon from filters I’ve re set up my external filter media. It’s something I’ve never paid much attention to until now and wanted to check I have done it correctly. So as the water flows through it’s in the following order:
Rough sponge
Medium sponge
Polishing pads
Ceramic media
Ceramic media
Water back into tank

Does this sound ok? I’ve followed the flow of water in and out and set the external up on what most people said is best. I now have no carbon at all.

Depends on the filter and what they suggest. This is how to set up am ehiem 2217:

The ehfimech stops a lot of the debris before it hits the the coarse sponge so that it doesn't clog up as quickly.

I use pillow batting after the bio media (in my case pond matrix). Lots of people use pot scrubbers as they are cheap but allows for a lot of bypass.

Yes, the order you have the media is correct. If you wanted to add carbon temporarily, it would be the last to be hit by water coming out of the canister filter.
