RIP Wayne S. Leibel

Postby DJRansome » Fri Jul 09, 2021 3:55 pm

Wayne S. Leibel of Easton died Sunday May 16, 2021, not quite 70 years old.

For those of you not familiar with the name, he wrote many of the cichlid books I read when beginning in the hobby, authored many cichlid magazine articles and columns, and was a frequent speaker at cichlid conventions throughout the years.

Oh wow....
Wayne was a true giant in the Cichlid-keeping hobby, and I'm really sorry to hear that he's gone.
He's definitely gonna be missed. :(

There was a Greater Seattle Aquarium Society event recently to commemorate Wayne's passing, and they posted a very entertaining YouTube video of a talk Wayne gave in 2000 on the 'History of the Aquarium Hobby' at

I knew Wayne through the ACA, of course, and we shared not only a hobby, but also a background in biology at Yale. Wayne was passionate about Neotropical cichlids, hated Mbuna, and played a mean accordion. Good people. :fish:
