Feeding 2-2 1/2 inch Oscar.

about how many 1mm pellets should he be fed at feeding time. I usually throw in 4 or 5 twice a day. Should he be fed more and should it be 3 times per day cause he's small? Thanks in advance for input.

I think 4 or 5 twice a day should be fine, although it will probably act as if it is still hungry. Every Oscar I have ever raised was gluttonous! And, just for your own knowledge, Oscars are not African, they are South American.

Joselepiu, nothing else in tank right now. He's in a 20 gallon right now, will have a new 75 gallon for him by Christmas. I tried a juvenile Jack Demp just bit smaller than my Oscar, but after 1 day the JD was harassing him(had to move him to mbuna tank asap) and he's doing great in there. I'll try the JD in 75 gal w Oscar when set up.

And Old Newbie, thanks. Yeah mine always seems hungry too, just like my mbuna. I know Oscars(& JD's) are S American, but thanks. I mainly have mbuna so thought i would just post here.

A varied diet will be best for your Oscar throughout its life, so trying some treats while he is small would be great. Freeze dried krill, some fruit bits, earthworms, mealworms. A good portion of Oscars diet should be veg based. Kelp wafers, veg pellets. A vitamin supplement will strengthen bone structure while he is in his rapid growth period of 3-10 months of age. Most important of all is pristine water. In 20g, even at 2-3ins I would be changing large volumes every 2-3 days. I strongly suggest forgetting any tankmates in 75g. If you have ever seen an adult Oscar of well over a foot long, 2+lbs in weight, you would get the idea that a 75g tank is a veritable soupbowl for a fish that size. A well cared for, genetically strong Oscar can easily reach 14ins by its 2nd birthday. Big fish need big space. I have Oscars that make 6ft tanks look small. If its a viable option for you, seek out a tank of 5ft length, 100g or better as a permanent home for your Oscar. Oscar does not respond well to cramped quarters.
