Making a territory to defend. You should remove the substrate underneath and put the cave directly on the glass so he can't get stuck if it falls on him.

Interesting! Is this common with cichlids and decoration? They have done it with the piece of wood I have in there as well. Thanks for letting me know!

Yes, this is very common for cichlids and part of their natural behavior.
